CMaD has entered into a joint project with Skillshare International and the European Union. This is a demonstration project for semi arid areas and supports the provision of clean water and sanitation at three schools, in conjunction with a demonstration irrigation project. The CMaD contribution was £10,000 and this donation released £30,000 from the EU.
The overall project aims are :
• Construction/rehabilitation of integrated environmentally-friendly rainwater harvesting and management systems, including water pans, earth dams, water regulation systems and farm ponds.
• Introduction of environmentally complementary technologies and supplementary livelihood systems, such as low-cost micro-irrigation systems, tree and vegetable seedling nurseries, fodder production and storage systems, draught animal technologies, beekeeping and honey production.
• Construction of auxiliary facilities for water supply and sanitation for schools and communities, including roof water catchment and storage tanks and sanitation facilities in schools.
• Training of communities in maintenance and use of all technologies and systems.
The outcomes of the projects are expected to be :
• Increased and sustainable water supply for domestic, livestock and agricultural use for 16,000 pastoral community members
• Strengthened ability of 16,000 pastoral community members to cope with droughts, water scarcity and degraded environments
• Improved food security and enhanced income/reduced welfare dependency
• Improved sanitation and provision of drinking water for 2,000 school children and 80 teachers
• Enhanced collaboration, networking and partnership on rainwater harvesting methods among community-based organisations and stakeholders.
