| Sierra Leone, Talia Makaya school and literacy project CMaD School and community, Talia Makaya
CMaD took over ownership and all the running costs of a well regarded but bankrupt school in Talia Makaya, near Kenema in Sierra Leone from 2008, after it and the children were abandoned by the previous sponsors. The school looks after 150 local orphans from the civil war.The school and associated lands were gifted to CBM and the land may be used for an agriculture-based development in the future.
CMaD has paid for the construction of some additional facilities, including a proper kitchen for school meals, a dining hall and a surgery/health centre (see separate section). CMaD also paid for proper toilet blocks to be constructed in the village, to overcome a major problem of effluent borne diseases which was having a terrible effect on infant mortality there.
CMaD is also sponsoring an adult literacy class, which teaches basic reading and writing and essential healthcare messages to local villagers.
The School was visited in April 2010 and found to be working very well, The children are well looked after and noisily happy. They continue to receive a meal a day from the new dining hall. New toilets and wash facilities have been completed and have improved their health and hygiene.
