| Eritrea, Bee keeping Beekeeping project in Eritrea
In 2008, CMaD provided funds to support a beekeeping project in Eritrea, being run by Self Help Africa (SHA) in conjunction with the Eritrean Ministry of Agriculture.
Traditional agriculture and livestock production remains the primary livelihood and employment for about 85% of the population in Eritrea. Beekeeping is a well-established tradition in most areas, and is an important source of income to many households.
Recognising the potential to increase household income among the poorest farmers, during 1998 - 2000 the Eritrean government distributed 12,000 improved beehives. Sadly though few of these hives were colonised, due to a shortage of bees. CMaD helped here by providing funds to improve bee breeding and the production of plants favoured by the honey bee.
